From Grimsby to Girona

The 2021 Friends of the Podcast series

In this first instalment of our young riders' diaries, Joe Laverick, Red Walters and Marjolein van’t Geloof introduce themselves and tell us about the start to their year.

Young riders have been hit harder by the coronavirus pandemic than professional riders in the WorldTour. For Joe and Red, who are both under-23s, it has been particularly tough, with virtually all their races postponed or cancelled.

Throughout this they have remained committed to their sport, but there have been some challenging times for them, and also for Marjolein, who as well as riding for Drops-Le Col, works as a physiotherapist.

At least she has been able to race. And she has had a strong start to the year, the standout being 5th place at Le Samyn.

As well as showing an impressive commitment to their sport, all three have been committed to their audio diaries for our listeners.

In this episode you’ll hear Joe telling a gripping story, full of as much drama and excitement as many races, of a complicated journey from the family home in Grimsby to his new base in Girona.

Find out more about our three audio diarists in The Reading Room.
