The Dumoulin Who Never Was
Kilometre 0 takes a look at the career of Dutch rider Thomas Dekker, who was hailed as a potential future grand tour champion when he won two silver medals as an under-23 rider at the 2004 World Championships. But he failed to deliver fully on that early promise and now he’s retired and able to reflect on his career says his head was turned by the early success. A doping ban applied retrospectively after some stored samples were tested put paid to any hopes of Dekker becoming the first Dutch grand tour winner since Joop Zoetemelk in 1980. In this episode of Fuoripista, we delve off the Giro’s race route to speak to Dekker, who is working on the Giro as a journalist, to ask him about his career and ask what it takes to win a grand tour and why Tom Dumoulin has it and Dekker didn’t.
