In the ninth Friends Special of 2016, we look at Alberto Contador’s career: from his crash and near-fatal aneurysm in 2004, to his first Tour de France win in 2007, his battle with teammate Lance Armstrong in the 2009 Tour, his positive test for clenbuterol in 2010, and his commitment to attacking, aggressive tactics – most recently at the 2016 Vuelta a España.

A hero for some and a villain for others, Contador might divide fans, yet most would admit that even if his powers are waning, he retains the capacity to light up races. There also remains a mystique about Contador. To try and better understand his career and the man himself, we speak to Johan Bruyneel, who guided Contador to his two Tour wins, from his mechanic, Faustino Muñoz, his teammate and friend Jesús Hernández, his brother Fran Contador, as well as Michael Rasmussen and Sean Yates, and journalists Fran Reyes and Andy Hood.
