On the eve of the 2006 Tour de France, as the teams gathered in Strasbourg, the Operacion Puerto doping scandal exploded. In the first post-Lance Armstrong race the two favourites, Jan Ullrich and Ivan Basso, were sent home before a pedal was turned. The Tour was in chaos.
