We need your support…
The Cycling Podcast, presented by Richard Moore, Lionel Birnie and Daniel Friebe, spluttered into life in June 2013 with a preview of the Tour de France. We produced daily shows during that Tour thanks to sponsorship from Sharp.
We carried on as a weekly show in 2013 and into 2014, again thanks to Sharp. With help from Dirt and Glory Media, we partnered with Jaguar at the 2014 Tour de France.
We broadcast on-the-ground reports, with exclusive interviews as well as commentary, discussion, analysis and debate from our three presenters, all experienced cycling journalists. In 2014 we became the first podcast ever to be accredited to the Tour de France.
Thanks to our Friends scheme, launched in 2015, we were able to secure The Cycling Podcast’s short-term future and achieve our aim of improving the quality and widening our coverage and ambition.
We have now attracted sponsors such as Rapha and Science in Sport, whose support has covered further costs: payment of production staff who previously worked as volunteers, travel, equipment, more shows and a further professionalisation of the podcast.
In 2017 the support of the Friends of the Podcast helped us to cover all three Grand Tours in their entirety; to bring on board François Thomazeau for the Tour de France, and Fran Reyes for the Vuelta a España; to produce monthly episodes of The Cycling Podcast Féminin, headed by Orla Chennaoui; and to launch a pilot show, The Cycling Podcast Brevet, which we hope to launch as a mini-series in 2018.
In 2018 the cost of being a Friend of the Podcast will be £15. This will give you access to at least 11 special episodes (‘at least’ because in 2017 we over-delivered, with 32 exclusive shows behind our paywall).
A few of you have, however, said that you would like to pay more. You don’t have to, but if you would like to, it helps cover the costs of the extra content, and allows us to go to even more races. It is a twist on a payment model that some of Lionel’s favourite restaurants are deploying: ‘Pay what you think it’s worth.’
We are proud of the Friends Specials we produced in 2017, from the Lionel of Flanders (a four-part series from the lesser known Belgian classics) to an exhilirating day in the Cannondale-Drapac team car at the Tour de France. We want to keep raising the bar with these shows, digging deeper into some of the stories that interest us. We are open to ideas – in fact, in 2018 we will offer the chance for a ‘Best Mate of the Podcast’ to guest edit a special episode.
Thank you for your continued support.
Richard, Lionel and Daniel
